What to expect

The first in a darkly enchanting fairytale-tinged fantasy duology about a morally grey witch, a cursed prince, and a prophecy that ignites their fate-twisted destinies, perfect for fans of The Cruel Prince and Serpent & Dove.

There's always a price for defying destiny.

Violet is a prophet and a liar, influencing the court as Seer with her cleverly phrased - and not always true - divinations. Honesty is for suckers, like the oh-so-not-charming Prince Cyrus, who plans to strip her of her title once he's crowned.

After the king asks her to falsely prophesy Cyrus's love story for an upcoming ball, Violet awakens a dreaded curse about the prince's future bride. Her wits may protect her in the cutthroat court, but they can't protect her against fate - nor the doomed attraction growing between her and the prince . . .

Critics Review

Beautifully vicious. Filled with court machinations and cunning characters, Violet Made of Thorns is a fantasy you won’t soon forget. Perfect for the fairytale reader who has always wanted the heroine to grow sharp teeth and bite Prince Charming

Chloe Gong, #1 New York Times bestselling author of These Violent Delights

An enchanting dark fantasy that turns tropes upside down while making us fall in love with the titular Violet, whose droll opinions and cunning self-protectiveness offer us a beautifully layered and endlessly fascinating narrator

Sabaa Tahir, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Ember in the Ashes series

Fantasy fans-rejoice! Violet Made of Thorns introduces us to a lush land where dark curses and magic reign. Chen’s prose is a delight

Erin A. Craig, New York Times bestselling author of House of Salt and Sorrows

The first thing I wanted to do when I finished Violet Made of Thorns was read it again. The second thing I wanted to do was write down all the moments that made me laugh, shiver, cry, fling the book across the room only to retrieve it five seconds later and apologize because I just can’t put it down. Violet has everything: court intrigue, cruel witches, aloof but hot princes, ambitious girls who will do anything to win. If Gina Chen doesn’t write five more of these I will riot

Victoria Lee, author of A Lesson in Vengeance and The Fever King

Violet Made of Thorns is a sharp, witty story told in an unforgettable voice, taking classic fantasy tropes and changing them into something totally new, original, and remarkable

Hannah Whitten, New York Times bestselling author of For the Wolf

Entrancing from start to finish. Violet is a one-of-a-kind protagonist, and Gina Chen has spun a consummate fairytale that will have readers gasping and squealing in turn

Joan He, New York Times bestselling author of The Ones We're Meant to Find

Chen weaves a delightful, sparkling tale of a sharp-tongued antiheroine who will have readers rooting for her from page one

June CL Tan, author of Jade Fire Gold

Everything you want from an enemies-to-lovers fantasy starring morally grey characters

I was hooked to every page. Gina Chen weaves magic into each sentence

Reach Plc (My LDN)

If you’re looking for your next addictive enemies-to-lovers YA fantasy story, look no further than Gina Chen’s darkly magical debut . . . Full of court intrigue, witchy machinations and characters whose motives are as untrustworthy as their morals, it’s a tale of fate-twisted destinies and the price that must be paid for defying prophecies

Culturefly

It has everything I look for in a young adult fantasy

My London

Full of court intrigue, witchy machinations and characters whose motives are as untrustworthy as their morals, it’s a sizzling enemies-to-lovers tale of fate-twisted destinies and the price that must be paid for defying prophecies. Enchanting and utterly addictive

Culturefly

A good few recent novels explore the relationships between current fantasy literature and the traditional tales among the foundations of the genre. This is one of the most thoughtful and thought-provoking that I have come across. Quite apart from that, it’s a skilfully written and entertaining second world fantasy novel in its own right. Highly recommended, and I look forward to reading whatever Gina Chen writes next
