Firstly, Robert Bathurst is a wonderful narrator of this first novel of Dorothy L Sayers. Secondly, what a fantastic novel with a brilliant lead character in Lord Peter Wimsey. Oddly, l never felt the urge or need to read Sayers as l grew up reading the novels of Christie, Marsh, Allingham, Tey and Dickson Carr, together with Chandler, Hammett and SS Van Dine. What a treat I've deprived myself of over these 60-years. To state that Sayers is a revelation is egregious understatement. The lady was a magnificent writer, and l fully understand the reason for her elevated position within the pantheon of Golden Age of Crime fiction. To purchase this novel on a whim feels almost sacrilegious but l have repented in buying books two and three as l await, hopefully, the brilliant narrator's completion of many more of Sayer's novels. To listen to another narrator, who are available, would be very off-putting having listened to Mr Bathurst.
