Critics Review
-
“Ms. Graves has created a bright and personable new detective who has been welcomed into the Eastport community with warmth and affection.”
Dallas Morning News
-
“Graves skillfully…draws out the suspense. Good entertainment.”
Publishers Weekly
-
“Small-town cozies feature tiny hamlets that have higher homicide rates than any crime-ridden metropolitan neighborhood! Graves skillfully creates another such town in Eastport, Maine, along with a tight plot, clever idioms, and a horde of eccentric characters. Lindsay Ellison’s narration is crisp, and her delivery of pithy sayings spot-on. She even manages to deliver a down-east accent without slipping into caricature. She chuckles with obvious delight at the dialogue, whispers conspiratorially about dark secrets suitable for blackmail, and expresses her dismay with the new ‘sly, grinning worm in the apple.’ The clever dialogue drives this novel, creating characters sparkling with life.”

Synopsis
For ex-Wall Streeter Jacobia "Jake" Tiptree and her teenage son, Sam, September promises tranquil days winter-proofing their rambling handyman's special of a home in Eastport, Maine. But there's nothing idyllic about this Down East autumn. For starters, the return of truly vicious native son Reuben Tate stirs up the town. And when somebody slits Reuben's throat and hangs his corpse on the cemetery gate, the police trace a bloodied scalpel to surgeon Victor Tiptree—Jake's former husband. Yet Jake knows her troublesome, trouble-prone ex is capable of just about anything except murder. Proving that, though, will involve nailing the real killer.
