What to expect
After the sudden death of her ex-husband, Brian, Lauren helps Brian’s much-younger widow, Jessica, arrange the funeral and settle his affairs. Although they were once adversaries in the battle for Brian’s heart, Lauren agrees to pitch in for the sake of their troubled sixteen-year-old daughter, Emily. But Lauren gets much more than she bargained for when information comes to light about Brian’s shady business deals with his old college friend Jordan Connors and the crime lord Jorge Arena, jeopardizing Brian’s estate and throwing the women into the world of high-stakes illegal gambling.
With only a few days to find out where Brian hid millions of dollars in bonds and in fear for their lives, Lauren, Jessica, and Emily must set aside their differences and work together to secure their inheritance and evade Jorge Arena’s murderous crew.
Widows-in-Law is a gripping tale of mothers and daughters, wives and ex-wives, broken and remade families, and unlikely partners-in-crime. Most of all, it is a moving story about the women left behind to clean up the messes men make.
Critics Review
-
“Miller has a special ability to craft descriptive fast-paced prose, creating an exciting crime novel that is also an astute commentary on the state of family and marriage today.”
Charles Belfoure, New York Times bestselling author of The Paris Architect
-
“Offering insight into the workings of the judicial system, the FBI, and the underworld, this fast-paced and explosive novel is filled with intrigue. The three females live in terror and fight not only for their lives but for their due, unaware of the horror awaiting them from a man they once loved and who wronged them all for the sake of greed. In addition to the circumstances they face, the bombshell ending is completely unexpected.”
New York Journal of Books
-
“Miller populates her novel with truly dynamic female characters…The suspense increases as villains target the heroic trio…A tense novel with three remarkable main characters.”
Kirkus Reviews
-
“An engaging thriller.”

“An unlikely partnership between the ex-wife and the new wife of a lawyer evolves after his mysterious death in this action-packed, suspenseful novel filled with rich characters and unpredictable turns. You will stay up late to finish it.”
Lorena Hughes, author of The Sisters of Alameda Street
-
“There are more twists and turns than a switchback road in Miller’s lean, mean, taut thriller that will leave you seat teetering and page flipping. It’s also a rich novel finely woven like a Persian rug with characters—especially the three women at the heart of the story—as real as the closest women in your own life. The recovery set will find much to identify with in the protagonist Lauren, whose years of sobriety help her navigate the high-stakes, high-risk, high-heart-palpitating landmine she’s stepped into. Can’t wait for the movie!”
Jamie Brickhouse, author of Dangerous When Wet: A Memoir of Booze, Sex, and My Mother
-
“Michele Miller has had more lives than a cat, and they’ve made her a writer of passion and substance.”
Lawrence Block, New York Times bestselling author
-
“Seasoned narrator Nancy Wu…narrates in a cool and controlled voice, and the characters come across as typical New Yorkers with varying accents and emotional responses…Listeners will enjoy the plot twists and high-adrenaline moments in this mystery.”
