Alan Moore is a British writer widely regarded as the greatest comic book and graphic novel writer of all time — a visionary whose work transformed the medium and influenced generations of creators across comics, film, television, and literature.
Born in Northampton in 1953, Moore grew up in a working-class family and was largely self-educated. He began his career in the late 1970s writing for British comics magazines, including 2000 AD, where he created The Ballad of Halo Jones — a science fiction epic following an ordinary woman's extraordinary journey across the galaxy that demonstrated Moore's ability to bring literary depth and social commentary to the comics form.
Watchmen (1986-87), created with artist Dave Gibbons, is widely considered one of the greatest works of fiction in any medium — a deconstruction of the superhero genre that explores politics, morality, and human nature with unprecedented complexity. V for Vendetta, From Hell, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Swamp Thing, and Batman: The Killing Joke are all landmark works that redefined what comics could achieve.
Moore's writing is characterised by structural innovation, literary ambition, political engagement, and an extraordinary command of the medium's unique storytelling possibilities. He has also written prose novels, including Jerusalem, a vast, hallucinatory portrait of his native Northampton.
Moore has famously refused to participate in film adaptations of his work and has been a vocal critic of the mainstream comics industry.
The audiobook editions of Moore's prose works and audio adaptations of his comics are fascinating. His books and audiobooks offer access to one of the most original and influential creative minds of our time.
