Mark Twain was the pen name of Samuel Langhorne Clemens — an American writer, humorist, lecturer, and cultural icon who is widely regarded as one of the greatest American authors of all time and the father of American literature. Born in Florida, Missouri in 1835, Clemens grew up in Hannibal, Missouri, on the banks of the Mississippi River — the setting that would inspire his most famous works. He worked as a printer, steamboat pilot, journalist, and silver miner before finding his voice as a writer and lecturer. The pen name Mark Twain comes from a riverboat term meaning two fathoms deep — safe water. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884) are cornerstones of American literature. Huckleberry Finn — with its revolutionary use of vernacular language and its devastating critique of racism and slavery — has been called the great American novel. Ernest Hemingway declared that all modern American literature comes from Huckleberry Finn. A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, The Prince and the Pauper, Pudd'nhead Wilson, and his travel writings (The Innocents Abroad, Roughing It) demonstrate his extraordinary range. Twain was the most famous American of his age — a celebrity whose wit, white suit, and magnificent moustache were recognised worldwide. His writing combines humour, social criticism, and a profound understanding of human nature. He died on 21 April 1910, aged seventy-four. The audiobook editions of Twain's works are wonderful — his conversational, witty prose was born to be performed. His books and audiobooks are essential for anyone who loves American literature, brilliant humour, and timeless storytelling.
