These are beautifully written, sharply observant stories written during and about the second world war in England. Although I was unfamiliar with this book, and chose it purely because it was a Persephone audiobook, I was immediately taken with the voice of the author and was not at all surprised to learn that Panter-Downes was a popular New Yorker writer and journalist; she shares that journal's specific authorial tone, perhaps described as a mildly amused and seemingly effortless ability to capture the heart of a story or interaction in a few quick strokes. Here the reader is given a little window into the lives of ordinary people adapting to extraordinary times. The reader was excellent.
