What to expect
What if the year's most talked about TV show was all about your marriage?
Kate, thirty years into her marriage, has a seemingly idyllic metropolitan, North London life.
Phoebe, a young screenwriter, is the creator of the year's hit TV show, Cheating.
When Kate's world takes a darker turn, she thinks she sees details and intimacies in the show that only she and her husband Jack could possibly have known. But who has betrayed who? Who gets to tell whose story?
A black comedy of resentment and entitlement, Look What You Made Me Do is the story of two very different women from two very different generations, heading toward a battle only one of them can win.

Great twisty tale, best eaten cold! Stay focussed on the narrators.

There is a real wicked gleam in this particular Lanchester plot. This novel harkens back to the grim humor of one of my favorites of his works, his first novel The Debt to Pleasure. Here we have a series of operatically escalating tensions, and it was truly a joy to read just how devilish and deviously dark this particular revenge story got. Lots of marinated fury and vengeance. Excellent contemporary social observation. Both gleefully excessive and completely brutal. Whew!

I found this book quite entertaining! It was not super profound and I’m not sure it will necessarily stay with me for very long, but I thought both narrators were very good, really distinct from each other. They each gave me a really good picture of the character they were portraying. I did spot what would happen fairly early on, but it was still interesting to see how it would all play out in the end.
Although this book was framed as a “ clash of the generations” in many of the book reviews, it didn’t really come over that way to me. I felt it was more a clash between two formidable women. For me, the takeaway was more that there are formidable women in every generation. It was slightly annoying that the older character was repeatedly described as a “ boomer” when she was much more likely to be Generation X.
I sort of wished the commentary on the generations had not been part of the story, as I’m not sure it added anything.A.Reader 2026-05-16
