Lucy Foley's first but presumably not last Miss Marple novel is very good. The narration is generally very good. I would recommend it to Christie fans as l do Sophie Hannah's Hercules Poirot novels. The structure of this novel differs markedly from the general structure of the Grande Dame's novels. This is not to criticise Ms Foley's very worthwhile endeavours but it makes you realise what a truly wondrous story-teller Dame Agatha Christie was. The great lady doesn't get the credit she deserves for producing tightly drawn novels from which her magical and unequalled plots appeared to grow organically from every line she wrote. The plot and structure were symbiotic.

An engrossing mystery set in a vividly portrayed alpine environment and with a satisfying conclusion. The multiple viewpoints rendered by different narrators with distinctive voices are easy to follow and give the plot an extra dimension. There are several layers to this story - a critique of masculine power and political corruption, an undermining of stereotypes around age and femininity, a reminder of wartime resistance and sacrifice...all of which give it a contemporary relevance. However, somehow the Marple character takes a rather background role which, being a fan of the original version, I found disappointing. Still highly enjoyable though and deserving of five stars.
