From the author of When God was a Rabbit and Tin Man, Still Life is a big-hearted story of the families we forge and the friendships that make us.

1944, Italy. As bombs fall around them, two strangers meet in the ruined wine cellar of a Tuscan villa and share an extraordinary evening.

Ulysses Temper is a young British soldier, Evelyn Skinner a 64-year-old art historian living life on her own terms. She has come to salvage paintings from the wreckage of war and relive memories of her youth when her heart was stolen by an Italian maid in a particular room with a view. Ulysses’ chance encounter with Evelyn will transform his life – and all those who love him back home in London – forever.

Uplifting, sweeping and full of unforgettable characters, Still Life is a novel about beauty, love, family and friendship.

I think this is one of the best narrated audiobooks I have listened to.I really felt that I knew all the characters well through the voices used for each and was able to picture each of them in detail simply through the voices. This really brought the book to life. It is an affirming story about people whose relationships weave in and out amongst themselves, set partly in Docklands London and also Florence. I really enjoyed it. I'm not give the story itself give stars because whilst it was heartwarming which is a great relief at the moment, it isn't the best storyline. But I would certainly highly recommend a listen

I have just finished this and would go to the start again if I didnu2019t have a book club meeting in 5 minutes. This book is many stories in one. It made me cry 3 times. Characterisation is so rich and convincing. The attention to detail makes me forget I am listening to a fiction. It is warm and lush. Full of poetry, philosophy, art history, politics, and oh my goodness u2026 food! It is beautifully read.

What a cast of characters! Plus the two central locations of London and Florence are bought to life by the effortless but wonderful narration of Sarah Winman. Sorrow and comedy intertwine as they so often do in real life.
