While really enjoying the return of the greatest detective in fiction, Sophie Hannah can never capture the sometimes wrongly maligned "simplicity" of the writing of the grande dame of the art of the whodunit, the peerless Dame Agatha Christie. Simplicity, or the appearance of simplicity, is the genius of Christie: a genius that no one has come near to matching. Hannah employs too much exposition through the musings of Inspector Edward Catchpool which comes dangerously close to sidelining the star of the show, Hercule Poirot. And while the revealed plot is serpentine to the point of becoming a left-handed corkscrew (try using it right-handed to open a wine bottle and you'll understand what l mean) l still very much enjoyed the book because even a second-hand Poirot is always worth spending time with. Tutt is mostly excellent as narrator but his female characterisations are not always as clearly drawn as the need to be.
