The Magnificent Ambersons

'Pride is a tricky customer to deal with – it's like quicksand: you don't realize you're sinking until it's too late.'
First published in 1918, The Magnificent Ambersons is a beautifully crafted tale charting the decline of a wealthy Midwestern family, in parallel with the ever-changing landscape of early twentieth-century America.
Set against the backdrop of profound social and economic change, Tarkington's novel focusses on the affluent Amberson family, whose fortunes begin to fade as industrialisation takes hold of their local town. At the centre is the young George Amberson, the spoiled and arrogant heir, whose selfishness alienates those around him – even Lucy Morgan, the woman he loves. But, little known to George, his mother and Lucy's father have a complicated history… As the Amberson empire begins to crumble, George is forced to confront humility and loss, and say goodbye to the status quo. A sharp social commentary and poignant portrait of a bygone era, The Magnificent Ambersons remains a remarkable twentieth-century classic. This audiobook edition is expertly read by Adam Sims.
