What to expect
A new collectible hardcover edition of Faulkner’s masterpiece, with thirteen brand-new illustrations
A classic of American literature from a Nobel Prize–winning author, The Sound and the Fury is widely considered to be one of the best novels of the twentieth century. William Faulkner expertly illustrates the epic and tragic story of the Compson family, three generations of Southern aristocrats on the brink of ruin.
Unprecedented for its time, Faulkner weaves a tale spanning nearly two decades and told from multiple points of view in a style all its own. Featuring some of the most memorable characters in literature—the beautiful and rebellious Caddy; the haunted and neurotic Quentin; the brutal and cynical Jason; and Dilsey, the matriarchal servant who observes them all—this novel is a heartrending investigation of family, legacy, social change, and the decline of a once powerful aristocratic dynasty.
Critics Review
-
“The Sound and the Fury constituted an artistic breakthrough…Careful patterns of words and images…create an artistic unity that transcends the fragmented perspectives on display.”
The Guardian (London)
-
“The Sound and the Fury is a masterpiece of the modernist movement that wasn’t afraid to reveal the dark side of the Mississippi aristocracy. It is a haunting tale you won’t soon forget.”

“No man ever put more of his heart and soul into the written word than did William Faulkner. If you want to know all you can about that heart and soul, the fiction where he put it is still right there.”
Eudora Welty
-
“William Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury is one of the monuments of High Modernism—America’s answer to James Joyce’s Ulysses.”
The Wall Street Journal

“One of the masterpieces of modernist American fiction, this may be a book that is better listened to than read. The intellectually challenged mind of Benjy Compson, voiced here by Golden Voice Edoardo Ballerini, is more easily entered via the ears than the eyes, and Bronson Pinchot’s portrayal of Benjy’s brother, the thoroughly reprehensible Jason Compson, is the nightmare he should be. Shaun Taylor-Corbett as Quentin and Robin Miles, delivering the only section that is not in first-person stream of consciousness, are also quite fine. Much of the novel rewards the kind of detailed study that can only be done on the page, but this audio version provides a matchless experience.”
