Maurice makes daily visits to his love, Geneviève Dixmer, who lives in a quarter known as the hiding place of the Chevalier of Maison Rouge, a daring counterrevolutionary with notorious plans to free Marie Antoinette, who languishes in prison awaiting trial and inevitable execution. Soon Lindey is drawn in to the plot by the queen’s champion.

“Narrator Simon Vance immediately places the listener into the action of Dumas’s energetic historical adventure…Vance’s narration greatly contributes to the excitement of the novel. He has a consistent serious tone when narrating the events of the story; however, he transforms his voice in the dialogue. Young Maurice Lindey speaks in a confident, sincere voice that marks him as a hero from the beginning. He especially stands out against the gruff colloquial voices of various supporting characters. Marie Antoinette speaks with both passion and reserve, and Vance’s characterization elicits sympathy for her. Overall, Vance’s compelling performance draws the listener into the audiobook’s tumultuous events.”
